EU imposes sanctions on 41 Russian vessels

The European Union has added 41 Russian vessels to its maritime sanctions list to curb operations of the so-called 'ghost fleet' used to evade international controls and support the war in Ukraine.

EU imposes sanctions on 41 Russian vessels

The measure was announced during a summit in Brussels, according to the Argentine News Agency. The decision, announced by the European Council, aims to prevent these vessels from continuing to operate outside transparency mechanisms, avoiding compliance with the Russian oil price cap and reducing financial resources allocated to the Kremlin's energy and military machinery. With this new list, nearly 600 vessels are now subject to sanctions in European territory.

Restrictions on Operations

The measures include: • prohibition of access to authorized ports; • blocking of maritime services and insurance; • strict controls to prevent the transport of looted Ukrainian goods.

The EC stated that these measures are in line with the full application of international maritime law, aimed at protecting critical underwater infrastructure and preventing hybrid or covert operations that could threaten regional security.

Brussels anticipated that it will continue to expand sanctions against individuals, companies, and vessels linked to activities considered evasive or that support the war in Ukraine.
